HANDBRAKE Late models have a two-cable handbrake linkage which incorporates a separate front and rear cable, as opposed to the twin front-to-rear cable system used previously.

Cable Replacement - Twin Cable System

With this system, either of the two cables can be replaced separately without disturbing the other one.
With the handbrake lever fully released, screw the cable adjustment nuts off the front end of the cable at the lever trunnion. Remove the cable guide plate (fairlead) located in the centre of the floor between the front seats.
Jack up the rear of the car and support on stands. Remove the appropriate rear wheel. Draw the cable through the floor pan from underneath the car and release it from the guide channel on the sub-frame front crossmember. Lever back the corners of the flange at the sector on the rear radius arm and release the cable from the sector.
Draw the cable through the aperture in the sub-frame towards the outside.
Remove the split pin and clevis pin securing the rear end of the cable to the handbrake lever at the brake backplate.
Release the cable from the abutment bracket at the backplate and remove it from the car.
Install the new cable in the reverse order of removing the old one. Nip the corners of the sector flange to hold the cable in position. Also ensure that the guide channel, sector pivot and operating lever clevis pin are adequately lubricated with grease.
Finally, adjust the handbrake cable as detailed in the ROUTINE MAINTENANCE section previously.

Cable Replacement - Front to Rear Cable System

With this system, the front cable must first be removed before the rear cable assembly can be detached.
With the handbrake lever fully released, screw the cable adjustment nut off the front end of the cable and detach the cable from the handbrake lever . Detach the cable guideplate, together with its sealing pad, from the floor pan between the front seats.
Jack up the car and support on stands, then remove the appropriate rear wheel. Pull the front cable through the floor pan and disconnect it from the compensator assembly on the rear cable.
At each brake backplate, remove the split pin and clevis pin securing the rear end of the cable to the handbrake operating lever. Also release the cable from the abutment brackets at the backplates.
At the rear radius arms, lever back the flange at the sector corners where it retains the cable and release the cable from the sectors. Pull the cable through the aperture in the sub-frame towards the centre of the car. Lever back the retaining tags at the sub-frame guide plate and remove the rear cable complete with the compensator assembly.
Install the new cable in the reverse order of removing the old one. Nip the comers of the sector flange to hold the new cable in position. Ensure that the cable run is adequately lubricated with grease at the guide channel, sector pivots and operating lever clevis pins.
Finally, adjust the handbrake cable as detailed in the ROUTINE MAINTENANCE section previously.
